Tuesday, the House of Glory was filled to commemorate the time the Bishop Gorman girls’ basketball seniors have spent on the court.
This season’s senior night honored two players, Mackenzie Motzny ‘26 and Aaliah “Lizzy” Spaight ‘26. Tables adorned with flowers, balloons, gifts, and other decor were placed in the back of the gym behind the court to give a physical display of the love teammates, family, and friends have for these senior players.
Flooded with emotions, the seniors walked out on to the court, surrounded by those who have supported them throughout their athletic careers. Motzny shared, “I definitely was a little sad since it would be one of my last games here at Gorman, but I was also happy because at least my whole family was there, and my friends too.”
Being some of the more experienced players on the team, seniors have younger players looking up to them, automatically putting the seniors in a leadership position, whether they are named captain or not. Motzny said, “To me, this means to lead by example and to help [younger players] pick up good habits that may be able to help them in the future.”
Looking back on the start of her career as a Gorman basketball player, Motzny shared advice she would give to younger players in the program looking to move up to varsity next season. “Always push yourself and show up because coaches notice that. Don’t be afraid to get uncomfortable whether that would be new drills or even when conditioning gets bad.”
The final score of the game was 66-44, a great way to finish off the season’s last season at Gorman. The ceremony helped to celebrate the camaraderie the seniors have built on the team, and help them to look back on what will be missed of this team. Motzny shared, “What I’ll miss about Gorman basketball is the bond that I’ve made with my teammates.”
