Sophia Lagomarsino ‘26, a senior at Bishop Gorman, has spent her years on campus determined to make a lasting impact.
As an active member of ASG and the current student body vice president, Lagomarsino has helped organize events, represent the student body, and contribute to the school’s community. In addition to her work in ASG, she also helped found the Women in STEM club during her junior year, creating a space where female students can explore science, technology, engineering, and math while supporting one another in fields where women are often underrepresented.
“Attending BGHS has given me plenty of opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and do things that challenge me,” Lagomarsino said. “A lot of the activities I do now are ones my freshman or even sophomore self never thought I would be doing, but have really started to steer me to find what I am truly passionate about. The way I have pushed myself in high school has shown me that I can do things that scare me, because I know they could really change me if I give them a chance.”
Academically, one of her most meaningful experiences has been participating in the AP Capstone program, which includes AP Seminar and AP Research. The program allows students to pursue independent research on topics that interest them, something Lagomarsino has embraced.
“I’ve gotten to do academic research on what I’ve wanted to study, and I’ve gotten to learn about so many different fields,” Lagomarsino said. “This year, I’ve been conducting research on energy drinks and students’ cognitive activation, and it’s really shown me the passion I have for nutrition science and biopsychology.”
Leadership has also been a defining part of Lagomarsino’s high school experience. As student body vice president, she helps lead ASG initiatives and manages the school’s social media accounts.
“In ASG, I’m the student body VP, and I also run the school social media,” Lagomarsino ‘26 said. “ASG has taught me that leadership isn’t measured in titles or positions. Yes, I hold a big leadership title, but I believe my most valuable leadership experiences have taught me that leadership is like integrity. It’s about what you do without the recognition, and making a difference nonetheless.”
Lagomarsino’s passion for empowering others also led to the creation of the Women in STEM club alongside friends Payton Umphress ‘26 and Vivi Boateng ‘26. The group aims to provide opportunities and encouragement for girls interested in STEM fields.
“For me, what inspired Women in STEM was the idea that small steps can create a meaningful impact,” she said. “Feminism and empowering other girls and women has always been a passion of mine, even if it wouldn’t solve global inequality, it created an impact on the girls here, and that’s super rewarding to us.”
Outside the classroom, Lagomarsino has dedicated much of her life to athletics. She has been a competitive gymnast for most of her life and is finishing her final season this year. In addition to competing, she also coaches younger gymnasts, helping guide the next generation of athletes.
“Within that, I also coach gymnastics, and I think it’s really cool that I can be a leader and be part of younger athletes’ gymnastics journeys,” Lagomarsino said.
Her interest in health and fitness continues beyond gymnastics. Lagomarsino hopes to become a Pilates instructor in the near future, another challenge she is excited to take on. While her high school career has been filled with achievements, Lagomarsino said junior year tested her ability to balance demanding courses, leadership responsibilities, and athletics.
“Junior year was definitely a challenge for me,” she said. “Looking back, I performed well, but I think I would have been happier if I focused on things that truly mattered to me, not what I was told should matter.”
As graduation approaches, Lagomarsino is still waiting to hear back from several colleges and plans to keep an open mind about where she will continue her education. While she has not finalized her path, she knows her interests lie somewhere within the STEM and medical fields.
“I’m trying to stay open minded knowing that I’ll end up where I’m meant to go,” she said. “My goal is to make the absolute most of it, and focus on filling my plate with only things that I truly have a passion for.”
Through her leadership, curiosity, and commitment to uplifting others, Lagomarsino has already left a meaningful impact on the Bishop Gorman community.
