Throughout the shifting sports seasons, a trio of Bishop Gorman students dedicated themselves to chronicling the behind-the-scenes narratives of the school’s athletic programs.
Addysen “Addy” Carr ‘27, Beatrice “Bea” Coons ‘27, and Chloe Gregoryan ‘27, the school’s sideline reporters, spend each sports season interviewing student athletes and bringing the excitement of games to life.
The three girls each have their own stories for how they became a sideline reporter for Bishop Gorman. Each reporter was aware of Gorman’s past sideline reporter, Sutton Stoft ‘25, and were able to contact her for advice and opportunities for reporting. After following her at several football games and even basketball games, their passions all became true and they wanted to pursue that.
There are several steps that must be taken in order to prepare for these games. To elaborate on these steps, Coons said, “Football is much harder to do – I have to reach out to the guys way before the game so they know and I have to ask questions specific to them, which can easily change on the fly depending on the game.”
Preparing questions beforehand is a huge part of being ready for these on camera interviews as well. Coons continued, “Basketball is much better because I interview the players that had the best game. I usually have questions already written out ahead of time, but that varies also depending on how the game goes.”
On the other hand, Gregoryan said that in order to come up with the questions to ask the players, she tries to “take note of any achievements they have and write questions specific to their position.”
Sideline reporters are a great way to bring together a community and keep spirit involved with the school. Not only do they grow the sports together, but also give students a different perspective on the players and all the hard work that goes into what they do. Carr, who is also a player on the varsity women’s basketball team, believes that sideline reporters “bring a sense of life to the athletic community at Gorman.”
Since they each are relatively new to sideline reporting, they all set different goals for themselves in the future so they can continue to grow as reporters. Coons says, “I want to finish out the year with lots of wins under our belt. I am certain both basketball teams will go to playoffs – hopefully win state! I am excited to see what happens with that!”
Gregoryan wants to be able to “cover all sports at least once, so every team gets recognition for their hard work.”
With these goals in mind, they all have to keep focusing on what is also coming up in the near future, college. While staying connected and involved with the school, the question is, will they continue to do this after high school?
Gregoryan, Coons, and Carr each said that they want to pursue this as a career and do something in the sport-related media in college. Specifically, Gregoryan wishes to minor in journalism and possibly major in sports management. The limitations of their futures are endless, and each of them being juniors is a great start for what is to come.
