The 2024 Nevada State Girls Scholastic Chess Championship, held at Lake Tahoe School on April 20, 2024, witnessed the rise of a new chess champion Katy McCullough ’27. Competing among the best in the state, Kate’s strategic brilliance helped bring her to victory.

McCullough said the best part about the tournament “wasn’t just about the win, but the fact she made a couple of friends that she can play chess with in Las Vegas.” With each move, Katy displayed a deep understanding of the game, outmaneuvering her opponents. Her confidence soared as she progressed through the rounds, culminating in a final showdown where she emerged as the undisputed champion.

As Kate celebrates her victory, her journey is a reminder of the power of perseverance and making new friends and memories. With her name now etched in Nevada chess history, Kate McCullough is a shining example of determination and excellence.
