A chilling new thriller has been released on Netflix and is already turning the heads of horror fans.
Arriving on March 26, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen comes from the same producers behind the popular show Stranger Things, and is a dark disturbing story about the dangers of love and marriage.
From the producers, the Duffer Brothers, the story follows a bride-to-be Rachel (Camila Morrone), and her fiancé Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco) who are traveling to and staying at his family’s house for their wedding. The soon to be married couple experience a terrifying and increasingly dreadful week that makes Rachel question if she is marrying the right person in this terrifying psychological thriller.
Francesca Calencara ‘27 states, “The show feels more psychological than outright scary. Instead of relying on jump scares, it builds tension through uncertainty, paranoia, and the feeling that something is off but you can’t fully explain it. That kind of fear sticks longer because it plays with your mind.”
The show heavily relies on the theme of impending dread or despair leading up to marriage. Throughout this long week Rachel starts to uncover the truth about her family and the true meaning of commitment through eerie and supernatural moments.
Calancea also mentioned, “The most uneasy moments are when everything seems normal on the surface, but small details feel wrong and those scenes create a constant sense of dread. My favorite scenes are the ones where the truth starts to unravel because they finally connect all the tension that’s been building. “
After Rachel has gone through countless times of paranoia and dark signs, she is led to the discovery of a deadly curse that is plagued to her bloodline and could be life threatening to Rachel and her fiancé’s family if she doesn’t marry her true soulmate by sundown on their wedding day. Fans have been discussing the controversy of the ending and the deeper message hidden behind the story of curses and soulmates.
Calancea concluded, “The ending feels more tragic than satisfying. It doesn’t fully resolve everything in a comforting way, which fits the tone of the show but can leave you feeling unsettled……The show seems to suggest that trust is fragile and can easily break when fear or doubt enters a relationship. It shows how people can start questioning even those closest to them when they feel something isn’t right.”
In the end, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen suggests that even if you’re able to walk away from the fear of commitment, it doesn’t always mean you’ve completely escaped what scares you.
