From early-morning practices to fast finishes in the pool, the Varsity Swim and Dive teams at Bishop Gorman High School kicked off their season in February with intensity, showing both depth and determination as they took on some of the region’s top programs.
The girls and boys teams have attended five meets so far, dominating the competition with depth, consistency, and standout performances across every event. The season opened with Bishop Gorman facing Arbor View, followed by a second and third meet where they squared off against Arbor View, Centennial, and Coronado. The fourth event was the Bob Swift Meet, followed most recently by a matchup featuring Bishop Gorman against Arbor View, Dural Red Rock, and Faith Lutheran.
This latest meet, against some of the most competitive high school teams in Vegas, ended with Bishop Gorman’s girls winning by over 171 points. Regarding relays, BGHS came out on top with both teams winning the 200 Medley Relays and free relay. The boys even won the 400 free relay, a huge accomplishment for the team. Between numerous event victories and various qualifications for regionals, the meet was a success as far as getting the team aligned and determined for a great season.
“The teams’ goals are to continue practicing, improve on certain skills, and have as many swimmers qualify for regionals as possible,” Bella Cicchetti ‘28, a member of the Girls Varsity Swim Team, said. “It really helps to have as many people on the team as possible to help those who are struggling or just started learning the strokes.”
Besides making improvements and dominating meets, the teams have established a connection that sets them apart from every competitor. “This season especially, there really is a place for everyone and someone is always behind your lane to cheer you on,” Cicchetti ‘28 said. “Everyone is there for one another and is always sharing advice, even the coaches.” She continued to explain how Swim and Dive coaches truly care about their athletes, and constantly take the time to sit down and talk to them individually.
With the pressure to perform well and the physical stress a sport like swimming requires, the team finds ways to motivate themselves throughout the season. “Personally, I think about the team’s success more than my own,” Tyler Protell ’26, a member of the Boys Varsity Swim Team, said. “I have to keep working hard for my team because if I can’t do that, then they can’t expect themselves to do it as well.”
Being halfway through their season and on the road to regionals, Bishop Gorman’s Varsity Swim and Dive teams are well-positioned for continued success as the season progresses. With confidence high and goals set, they are ready to make an even bigger splash at the meets ahead.
