After a challenging stretch to open the season, the Bishop Gorman men’s lacrosse team found their momentum in a dramatic win, defeating Coronado 12-11 in overtime to push their record to 2-3 on the year.
The Gaels faced adversity early, facing Santa Margarita on Feb. 28 falling short 20-5. They suffered another loss 20-5 against Mater Dei on March 7. Although the scores seem lopsided, they provided experience against some of the nation’s top programs.
“I think our losses helped us see the biggest mistakes we made,” Mason Wingard ‘28 said. That mindset has become a key part of the team’s early-season growth, as players continue to learn from tough matchups. “It really helped us highlight our mistakes, especially defensively,” Wingard added.
The Gaels bounced back quickly with a 13-5 win over Spanish Springs on March 6, where they played an intense game showing their offensive potential. Playing consistent seems to be a problem for the Gaels, as they fell short 10-5 to Granite Hills on March 13.
The team’s strength was displayed in its most recent game in a back and forth game against Coronado. The Gaels were able to secure the overtime victory by a clutch goal from Walker Penhollow ‘29.
“Merek, one of the LSMS, saw me on the crease as I popped out, I turned around real quick and shot it top side on the goalie” Penhollow said.
The goal came in overtime and secured the 12-11 win for the Gaels.
“The game was back and forth the whole time, an exciting one for sure,” Penhollow added.
As the season progresses, the Gaels will look to build off that momentum as they ease and settle into their consistent play.
