With a team ranked top 20 in the nation, the Bishop Gorman baseball team has come into the 2025-2026 season ready to compete and determined to take home the trophy.
The season started off strong with three back to back wins against Liberty, Shadow Ridge, and Basic. Winning these three games, especially against Basic, the boys were able to establish themselves early into the season.
The biggest game for this season was against the Basic Wolves on March 5. Outfielder and infielder Ajay Hermosura ‘29 explained that, “The emotions during the basic game was knowing that the game was going to be a dog fight. We had to go hard for seven innings the whole game, and just compete and have each other’s back.” With a walk off by Logan Grubbs ‘27, resulting in a big comeback, leaving the score 3-2 in the last inning, they proved to themselves and their fans that they won’t give up that easily.
The boys later had an unfortunate loss of 8-5 against Orange Lutheran on Saturday, March 7. Despite this setback, the Gaels didn’t let it affect their mentality. This simply served as a reminder to them to revisit their goals of, “playing solid defense, staying disciplined at the plate, and working together as a team. We also want to stay focused every game and keep improving as the season goes on, ” pitcher and infielder Hudson Ciulla ‘26 said.
This quick reminder got them right back on track before going into their first league game against Sierra Vista on Tuesday, March 10. With a final score of 14-4, the boys determined the outcome of the game within the first couple innings. This led into another win against Palo Verde last night, March 12, with a score of 8-6.
Much of this success is attributed to the hard work put in on and off the field. Hermosura expressed that, “When we were down in the fall, we wouldn’t fight and try to win. Now when we’re down, we show up every inning trying to start a rally.“
Coaches and players worked together to solve any problems, ensuring that the team that goes out on the field, is the best version of themselves. Preseason practices were all about finding any weak spots. Pitcher and infielder Noah Ramos ‘26 explained that, “The biggest challenge during the preseason was finding everyone’s role on the team. Once we figured that out, we knew what we had to do.” This confident yet powerful approach set the tone before the boys even stepped foot on the field.
The chemistry between the team is clearly represented throughout every game. With another chance to show this bond rooted in purpose, the Gaels take on the Palo Verde Panthers again tonight, March 13.
