Megan Moroney dropped her latest album Cloud 9 at midnight on Feb. 19.
Fans across the country stayed up to hear her latest songs. For fans in Las Vegas on Pacific Time, the album became available on the 18 at 9pm.
Here are my thoughts on her latest songs.
- “Cloud 9”- A love song about being above Cloud 9. It is about the highest highs of being in love. The honesty in the title track set the tone for the album.
- “Medicine”- The unhinged lyricism from the beginning of this song showed the singer’s humor. In a recent interview, Moroney shared that this album was going to be more honest, open, and pointed than her previous albums, and this song is evident of that.
- “Six Months Later”- This is probably my favorite song on the album. As the lead single, it set high expectations for the album for me. It is about getting over an ex that keeps coming back to you. The confidence in her lyricism is inspiring to fans.
- “Stupid”- This song shows the singer making excuses for the guy she is in a relationship with, saying that he is “a lotta bit pretty and a little dumb.” The song shows some denial, saying that he is not so stupid to ghost the singer. The upbeat tone of this song made it a fun listen.
- “Beautiful Things”- Another single that was released before the rest of the album, this song was one of the most heartwarming on the album. It is about how sometimes, the world can be cruel to you, but that does not mean that you are worth any less. It compares humanity to the “beautiful things” of the world that are destroyed by natural disasters, showing that just because someone is susceptible to stress or scrutiny does not mean they are any less beautiful.
- “Convincing”- A song about falling in love with someone you just met. It talks about not quite being in love with this person since you just met them, but someone might be convinced you are in love because it seems like you’ve known each other forever. I liked the slower pace of this song, and I thought it was some of the most beautiful music on the album.
- “Liars & Tigers & Bears”- This song spreads a significant message about being a woman, especially a woman in the spotlight. It is a good “crash out” song about things a lot of women are told about how to behave and how to watch out for yourself so no one gets the wrong message. I felt that this song captured a lot of the frustrations felt when you are trying to keep a perfect image.
- “I Only Miss You (featuring Ed Sheeran)”- I was surprised by this feature. I have seen Ed Sheeran appear in other artist’s songs, such as Taylor Swift, but I did not expect to see him on a country album. Nonetheless, this song was pretty good. It had some of the best lyricism on the album. I do not know how well the country vibe fit his voice when he was singing on his own, but his voice did blend with Moroney’s well when they sang together. The song was about constantly missing someone after a break up.
- “Wedding Dress”- One of the more devastating songs on the album. This song is about going through a breakup and not knowing if you will ever not miss this person and being scared that missing that person will creep up on you. And the most scary part of this is the chance of missing this person on your wedding day.
- “Change of Heart”- This song felt very empowering. It is about not waiting around for the “what ifs” and “maybes” and not making excuses or blaming yourself for someone else’s bad behavior. At the start of the song, I thought it was going to be a sad song, but the music got faster and louder when the chorus started, and turned into the perfect song to scream in the car with your friends.
- “Bells and Whistles (featuring Kacey Musgraves)”- This song had my favorite lyric off the album. “She’s like me without all the bells and the whistles.” I enjoyed how this song talked about not changing yourself for someone else because that person can find another version of you, without all the “Bells and Whistles,” of course, and I liked the confident undertones of the song.
- “Table for Two”- A song about wondering what would happen if you broke “no contact.” I loved the honesty in this song. It showed that yes, there are many confident songs on this album, but you are still going to wonder and miss someone.
- “Wish I Didn’t”- A song about falling for a guy with a bad reputation. This songs serves as a warning to the guy she is going out with, saying that he doesn’t want to make her “Wish I Didn’t” give him a chance.
- “Who Hurt You?”- The aftermath of falling for the wrong person, the person who did all these great things for you, but you should have seen the red flags. It talks about how the people around the singer said she should have seen the warnings, but she knows they would have fallen for his tricks too.
- “Waiting On the Rain”- Another brutally honest and vulnerable song about feeling a relationship will end, and knowing that this person is not the one for you, but you still love them. The singer talks about still loving this person and trying to enjoy the last moments with them, but you are still in pain, and you are just waiting for it to go bad so things will end.
- “Sorry…I Meant Tonight (Bonus)”- A song about meeting someone and jumping into being with them all the time. It is about the exciting and obsessive beginning stages of being in love. This song was very fun, and I thought it was a great note to end the album on.
As someone who has been a fan since her first studio album “Lucky,” I love this album. I think she keeps giving her fans amazing music, and she grows in popularity with each album drop. I would go so far to say this is my favorite album so far, and I’m glad that the signature color for this album is pink.
She will begin touring this album in May.
