In one of the most shocking moments of the 2026 Winter Olympics, 21-year-old American figure skater Ilia Malinin, nicknamed the “Quad God”, dropped from first place to eighth after falling twice in his free skate at the Milano Ice Skating Arena.
Entering the night as the gold medal favorite, Malinin’s routine unraveled after mistakes on two of his signature quadruple jumps. The performance marked his lowest score since 2022.“I blew it,” Malinin said afterward.
“He’s been built up as almost unbeatable, so seeing him fall twice just showed how intense the Olympic pressure really is,” said Olivia Palazzolo ‘27.
Many observers pointed to the intense mental pressure and scrutiny surrounding the young star. In recent months, Malinin has spoken openly about negative thoughts and mental strain, while troubling TikTok reposts sparked concern among fans online.
“When millions of people are analyzing every move you make, that has to weigh on you,” said Angelina Rivera ‘27.
The men’s Olympic title ultimately went to Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan, who called Malinin’s performance “very surprising.” Malinin’s fall from gold favorite to eighth place has since ignited widespread debate about the mental toll placed on elite athletes competing under the Olympic spotlight.
