This past month, both boys’ and girls’ basketball have been competing at the highest level in both Las Vegas and on a national level.
The boys’ basketball team had their very first game of the year on Jan. 1st, in the Hoophall West Tournament, where they lost to Sunnyslope (currently ranked No. 3 in the country) 51-65. They bounced back on the 2nd with a win against Gonzaga Prep, 54-47. On the 3rd, they played their last of the three game stretch, losing to Salesian College Prep 77-81. Gorman won the first of their eventual four game winning streak on the 7th, beating Desert Pines 65-62, followed by another victory against Coronado 62-58. The winning streak was capped off with wins against Mojave and Democracy Prep, beating Mojave 81-58 and Democracy Prep 61-57. Lastly, at the Nike Extravaganza held at Mater Dei High School, Gorman fell to Rolling Hills Prep 45-60, and came back with a win against Crean Lutheran 65-45, Gorman then beat Sierra Vista 68-45, and finally, lost to Liberty 56-58. They are currently the 2nd seed going into playoffs, with a record of 16-9, and 7-4 in January.
Guard Ty Johnson ‘27 said, “I think we’ve been performing pretty good, we had a good win against Coronado, a good win against Democracy Prep. I feel like those are the two biggest games of the season so far.”
The girls’ basketball team has had a more successful season than ever this year. They’re currently ranked No. 15 in the country according to ESPN, and peaked even higher. The Gaels started January on the 7th, beating Desert Pines 81-17. Following up with two more victories against Centennial and Legacy, beating Centennial 91-54 and Legacy 76-15. They then lost to Sage Hill 58-88, and beat Democracy Prep 63-51. The Gaels traveled to the Nike Extravaganza and played against Mater Dei, losing 64-68. The Gaels beat Faith Lutheran 74-18 on the 26th, they beat Coronado 73-29 on the 28th. And finally, to round out their January, the Gaels beat Liberty 64-23. The Gaels had a record of 7-2 in January, they’re 18-3 overall and ranked No. 1 in the state.
Wing Addysen Carr ‘27 said, “I feel like this is one of the best teams we’ve had yet since my time here at Gorman.”
