The haunting true story of Ed Gein—which inspired the notorious Silence of the Lambs, Psycho, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre films—has now been brought to life by Netflix’s new true-crime series Monsters : The Ed Gein Story.

Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez Brothers, and now, Ed Gein. Netflix’s Monsters : The Ed Gein Story, was the latest season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brenna’s anthology series that follows the celebrities of serial killers, and is now streaming on Netflix. This season has left fans appalled with the gruesome and terrifying details included.
Born in 1906, Ed Gein lived a very isolated childhood with his alcoholic father and abusive and religiously obsessed mother, Augusta Gein. Gein was known for his horrific crimes that shocked the nation. After the disappearance of Bernice Worden in 1957, Ed Gein was finally brought to the attention of police. Police were severely unsettled by the gruesome scene they found in Gein’s secluded farmhouse in Plainfield, Wisconsin. They found multiple collections of human remains which he got from grave robbing. They also found household items and clothing made from human skin, which is what separated Ed Gein from other famous serial killers.
The plot of the shows describes Gein’s life, his psychological state, his disturbing crimes, and how he has influenced a lot of American pop culture. Francesca Calancea ‘27 explained, “I wanted to watch the Ed Gein season because last year I watched the Ryan Murphy production of the Menéndez brothers and enjoyed it. And I heard Ed Gein was the inspiration of basically all horror movies so I was very intrigued.”
