On April 8, while juniors were taking the ACT, sophomores completed their service day by going to one of three locations; Threesquare, Opportunity Village, and Catholic Charities. They were organized by last names and were chaperoned by both staff from the school and staff from their designated charities.
The various assignments the sophomore class were assigned with were unique in each of the three organizations. These activities included; detangling cables, terracing, and painting at Opportunity Village, serving food, packaging cans, and cleaning tables at Three Square, and picking up trash, creating food boxes for the needy, cleaning windows, doors, and beds at the shelters for Catholic Charities.
“I worked at Three Square packaging produce and canned foods for families across the Las Vegas Valley. It felt incredibly fulfilling knowing that my work was going to help those in need in our community.” Keith Paredes ‘27 said.
While the students were earning their seven service hours for the day, they also reflected on what they learned from the event as well. They completed an assignment that reflects on how Catholic scripture and teachings relate to the intentions of the specific organization each student worked at. The activity required students to pair up and talk about their personal experiences and what they took away from the day of service.
“I learned to understand how we can help the people who don’t have easy access as we do to do certain things and make their everyday life easier.” Ariella Perez ‘27, volunteer from Opportunity Village, said.
When it was time for the service day for sophomores to come to an end, each student made five celebratory Easter cards, finishing off the day with a closing prayer before dismissal.
“I felt it was [amazing] making the unabled [blessing cards for Easter] and giving them to someone who really needs some support.” Calvin Abin ‘27, volunteer from Catholic Charities, said.
