With the first two school masses out of the way, Bishop Gorman students began to wonder: What happened to class mass?
This year, Administration and Campus Ministry made a change to the Bishop Gorman mass schedule. In years prior, students would attend at least one mass per month, alternating between all school and class masses. This year, class masses are being eliminated from this schedule, and the school will all attend mass together monthly.
According to Fr. Jacob Knee, the reasons for this switch are, “community, creativity, and practicality.” The mass can be a time for the school to pause and come together in the holy presence of God. “It is right and better for the whole community to come together to celebrate mass because we are a Catholic School and the mass is the center of what we are all about,” said Fr. Knee.
He also believes that it gives the musicians at our school a chance to shine monthly, rather than just having Mr. Latina sings alone at every mass. Additionally, it lets the school to stay in the church guidelines that allows a priest to only say two masses a day with some casewise exceptions.
Looking into a student’s perspective on how the school adjusted to the elimination of class masses, students had split feelings. Gavin Briseno ‘25 said, “I feel great about the masses. They serve as a good time for the Gorman community to get together and spend time with God.”
Being able to come together once a month as a school is not only important to administration, but to the students as well. “I think [all school masses] are very lively and it is able to bring us together as a community,” commented Sofia Romo ‘26.
All in all, school masses are more beneficial for the Gorman community. They allow everyone to come together, students and staff alike, to praise and worship God. It shows what Bishop Gorman High School stands for. As Romo explained, “I like school masses better because we are united together and one big family.”
