The Bishop Gorman High School internship program offers many valuable career exploration opportunities across a variety of fields, ranging from journalism, broadcasting, law, and the medical field. Held each summer, participants are given the chance to take a Hands-on experience in the areas of their interests and discover their passions.
Students can apply as juniors. Although it is unpaid, it is a great way to be immersed in whatever career that is chosen. Sutton Stoft ‘25, who interned for the Las Vegas Aviators, minor League Baseball Team last summer said, “previous work experience makes you stand out for any job opportunity or experience you’re applying for.” Experience is harder to find to put on your resume rather than just education. The coordinator of the program, Ms. Houston said, “nowadays, it’s not just education anymore. People want experience when they go to hire you.”
Students gain various skills of organization, leadership, and communication. A lot of students in high school lack real-world skills that are highly necessary to their own success. It’s important to have these skills and when given the opportunity it’s key to take it. Stoft said, “this is a unique opportunity for Bishop Gorman students. More people should take advantage, it really sets us up for success, for not only these next important years in high school, but for college.”
Students are exposed to numerous skills as they are immersed into the professional workforce. Ms. Houston said, “you have to learn how to assess the situation and say ‘this needs to be done, so I’m going to do that’ and then also problem solving.” These skills are highly fundamental in the real world. Senior Shane O’Hanley interned for the Princeton Review, pursuing his interest in journalism. He said, “I gained the skill of punctuality because I had certain deadlines for all my assignments and had to ensure the information that I had recorded was completely filled out correctly or my entire data would have been screwed up.” Attention to detail is also key when you’re hired for a job. It’s important to fulfill your obligations and work to the fullest.
When being chosen for the program, the students will be interviewed to ensure the classes they’ve taken and internship they are applying for aligns with their interests and where they see themselves after college. Ms. Houston said, “we look at what their grades are, behavioral issues, or if they even have the time.” When a student is chosen for an internship, it is important that they show professional qualities, as they are reflected onto Bishop Gorman.
Once the student is selected for a certain company, Bishop Gorman High School communicates what the student needs to reach out to the company. They are responsible for organizing the hours and completing the certain amount of hours required by the company. O’Hanley said, “it did a good job of aligning a specific organization to what you wanna do after college. I think the school does a good job of placing you with an organization that can help you learn valuable skills for the next level.”
