The mock trial team traveled across the country to Harvard University last weekend to compete against top schools from around the nation, showcasing their courtroom skills and passion for law in one of the most prestigious academic settings.
The team spent the weekend exploring the campus and its law program with Harvard’s mock trial team. Between hour-long seminars, Gorman students got the chance to learn about different aspects of laws and trials with one-on-one breakdowns of each team member’s state case, where the team got an unforgettable, personalized experience.
“Each period was given a mentor, or an active participant on the Harvard mock trial team that had been given our state case,” said Sabella Abraham ‘27, a member of Bishop Gorman’s mock trial team. “Each seminar was curated and presented by a student on the team, giving us a better idea of the facts from a student’s perspective.”
Besides spending time learning about the law, students got the chance to get to know Harvard’s campus. “My favorite part of the trip was getting to walk the campus and the area around it,” said Loren Brown ‘26. “It definitely helped me realize what type of environment I want to be a part of in college, and the importance of a campus.” Free time was spent in the Harvard book store, various cafes in the little college town of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and so much more, helping students get an idea of what they want their college experience to look like.
Each member of the mock trial team was able to take away a different thing from the trip. Whether it be a connection with Harvard’s team members, or a new way to go-about their classes, everyone took something back to Las Vegas with them. “This experience taught me that learning isn’t linear,” Abraham said. “I already learned about all of the topics that were brought up at the seminar in class, but I never would’ve had such a great and vast knowledge on such a localized topic if it weren’t for this trip.”
Thanks to the Harvard trip, the team can approach the upcoming competition season with a whole new realm of knowledge in their back pocket. “Now, I feel more confident than ever for this year!” Abraham said.
