It wasn’t just a game, it was tradition. On Sept. 19, the Bishop Gorman Gaels took on the Mater Dei Monarchs on Fertitta Field. By the end of the game not only had the students lost their voices but also their minds.
Once the doors opened students started flooding in, all oranged out. Senior Andreas Diaz- Nicolaidis ‘26 states that when walking out onto that field and hearing the student section that it was a very surreal moment for him. “Specifically for me transferring this year it was a big reminder of how all of my hard work had paid off.”
Throughout G- Block, they united in saying that they would describe the student sections as “electric.”
As the game intensified so did the student section, with every call from the referee, the students got more rowdy. Senior Tyler Portell states that one moment he will never forget was, “Prince’s scoop and score touchdown that got called back for defensive holding, and we let all the confetti poppers go off.” In that moment the student section has never been louder, and G-Block was alive going into half time.
Throughout the game the student section became a family. Senior Devin Diamond states, “I had some face paint on my hand and I had on my jungle suit. I would take the face paint, and I would draw a claw across the face. It was the mark of the jungle.” He brought people together throughout the whole game.
The 4th quarter came up quickly. Even though the Gaels came up short by three, Cade Seitman ‘26 states that through the student section he wants the football team to know that we are there to support them, “It gives them a reason to keep going forward, no matter how hard the situation is.”
Friday night was a show of unity for the Gaels. Protell states that he wanted to show Mater Dei, “ that we are a power house of a school.”
Even though the score board showed one story, the student section told their own. The student body will always have Friday night lights, and will always show up for their Gaels.
