Bishop Gorman football has been rolling the past few games, beating top -70 teams Lone Peak 35-14 and East St. Louis 35-10. Gorman is ranked No. 2 nationally behind only St. John Bosco after former No. 1 ranked Mater Dei lost to Corona Centennial 36-43.
The game against Lone Peak ended in a forfeit when more than three Lone Peak players left their sideline to engage in an altercation in the third quarter. Gorman did not leave their sideline, so they did not have to forfeit the game along with Lone Peak.
Senior kicker Hudson Borsari said the fight started when “Kaina caught a good pass, ran up to the sideline, someone got tripped over and then all of a sudden there’s a whole bunch of people there.” A rule stands in high school football, stating that if three or more players from one team leave the sideline to join an altercation, that team must forfeit the game.
Although the outcome was unique, the main focus for the team remains focused on improving. “We definitely have to tighten up all parts of the game…” Borsari said, “… there’s little things we have to work out, be more disciplined, and everything else will come together.” Last year, Borsari kicked 52/53 on PAT attempts last year, and four of five field goals. This year he’s shown just as much proficiency, hoping to carry that through the rest of the season.
Junior defensive back Kamil Loud has been key on defense for the Gaels. So far he’s averaging 2.3 tackles per game and has proven a very good defensive stopper.Loud is very optimistic about the defensive performance the Gales have been displaying early on in the season. “I feel like [Gorman defense] has been doing real well, held our opponents to not much, practice has been going great for us…” Loud said, “…we’ve been communicating and executing well, and in games showing why we’re the best defense in the nation.” Gorman has a chance to prove this tomorrow night against the top ranked receiver in the country, Chris Henry Jr.
Junior tight end Trent Walker is just as pleased with offensive production. Gorman offense is averaging 407.6 yards per game (rushing and passing). Walker is responsible for 46.3 yards per game, showing hyper production in the explosive offense. “The offense has been doing great on both fronts, the o-line and our receivers, and the quarterback and running backs,” Walker said.
Going into the most anticipated game of the year, Gorman shows no signs of any slowing down. Mater Dei vs Bishop Gorman takes place Friday, Sep. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
