Last weekend on Aug. 22-23, the Bishop Gorman tennis team hosted a tournament at Faith Lutheran, Palo Verde, and Coronado. The purpose of the tournament was for the top four teams in Las Vegas to have the chance to compete against each other.
“This season I’m most excited to win my matches and play doubles to try out the different fields,” said Ella Redden ‘26. She says that this tournament was a great way for her to prepare for a big year to come.
Although the tournament was very competitive, some people and players enjoyed just being there. They loved supporting each other during matches and that’s what it’s all about.
The girls’ team played very well, especially Camila Perez ‘27, and her younger sister Victoria Perez ‘29. C. Perez was able to win two medals, the singles and the mixed doubles. V. Perez is the No. 1 single starter, a term simply meaning she’s the highest ranked singles player on the team.
“I think our team could improve by staying consistent with our shots and being more focused at practice…” Skylar Poelmans ‘26, the captain of the girls’ team said, “…I think we did well fighting for every point and having good team chemistry.”
The boys’ team also played well, both junior Shawn deMilliano ‘27 and freshman Lucas Rago ‘29 were able to win a medal.
“I played in mixed doubles where I won my No. 2 mixed doubles bracket…” deMilliano said. “…I went 3-3 overall, I went 1-2 in singles and in doubles I went 2-1.”
Both the boys and girls teams play their next game against Pahrump High School, looking forward to a strong rest of the season.
