Bishop Gorman boy’s soccer has started the season with a record of 3-2-1. From now until the end of the season, the common goal amongst the players is to play at their best level and go all the way to state.
In their first three games, two taking place on Aug. 15 and one on Aug. 16, Gorman beat Churchill County 6-0, South Tahoe 3-0, and Reed 4-0. In their next two games, one on Aug. 16 and the other Aug. 18, Gorman lost to Sparks 0-2, and Liberty 1-3. In their last game on Aug. 20, Gorman tied Sierra Vista 1-1. Moving forward, Gorman looks to dominate the rest of the competition. “The team’s biggest goal is just to win every game,” Alexander Chandra ‘29 said.
Chandra is the only freshman on varsity this year, “It means a lot to me…” Chandra said, “…I get to wear the Bishop Gorman badge, as a freshman that’s a really big accomplishment for me.” As a young midfielder, he had some thoughts about the team’s play in that area. “We could’ve had better movement in the midfield, and done better building the ball out the back.”
Forward Andrew Luther ‘27 is not phased about the team’s start to the season, “It’s not a great loss…” Luther said, “…but I feel like we can do better in the future.” He looked on the bright side of their rocky start, mentioning that “it felt good” to play with his team and “it was fun to see everyone together.”
As a forward, Luther is meant to have an aggressive attitude, with the main focus of scoring goals. He thinks a stronger mindset can benefit the team as a whole, “We should mentally get stronger, come together more, and learn how we all play,” Luther said.
Forward Jamil Raquinio ‘26 is very experienced and poised to finish out his high school career on a high note. “Since it’s still early in the season, I think we can make the improvements that we need to,” Raquinio said. Among those he mentioned how hard the team works, and “controlling the pace of the game, controlling the ball and making sure we have the most possessions will give us the most opportunity.”
Opportunity will be everything in their next game. On Aug. 25 at 5:45 P.M., Gorman will take on the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Coronado High School. Coronado has started the season 6-0, with an average margin of victory of almost 10 goals. Gorman lost to Coronado last year 0-7, but this year, they’re looking to make a statement. “We learned from it, and we’ll be better,” Luther said.
