With the 2024-2025 school year at Bishop Gorman wrapping up, seniors are preparing to move into the next big chapter—college life. Students are beginning a process of packing and accumulating a long list of college dorm essentials, hoping to make their new space just like home.
With college involving lots of work and busy schedules, some students just want a simple dorm room to come home to. Kage Mir ‘25 said, “I’d want minimalist because I feel cozy already in simple areas. I’m one of those people that can fall asleep wherever I’m at. I also feel that it’ll be a lot to make my room how I want it and then cleans it all the time. I feel that I’m going to be really busy in college.”
Going to college a long way from home for some is a big deal. Bringing momentos may not be necessary but may help to bring comfort in students’ dorms. Angelina Codey ‘25 said, “I’m going to bring a teddy bear that I sleep with.”
Incoming freshmen are being posted on a collective instagram to see their new classmates. This way students can plan and find their future dorm mates and it helps a lot in planning for their dorm. Yvonna Schuckman ‘25 said, “My roommates and I are all going to have the same aesthetic but obviously stick to our own personal details, but we are trying to stick to one theme.”
Forgetting an item is almost inevitable when moving somewhere new. Codey said, “people usually seem to forget a laundry basket but they are actually super useful.” It’s vital to remember the small, everyday items—like a laundry basket.
These kinds of overlooked essentials can end up being the most frustrating to go without.
Schuckman said, “Laundry machines are really weird so being able to do your laundry in those mesh laundry bags is really helpful.” Packing a few basic laundry supplies ahead of time can save a lot of hassle during those first few weeks.
Lastly, Mila Mayo ‘25 said, “I see on TikTok that the power blocks for chargers are recommended so you can have multiple things plugged in at once, which I think would be super helpful.” TikTok is a great way to build your finalizing list of purchases to make your dorm room feel like home.
No matter how you are decorating or picking out your dorm, it is important to create a space for yourself where you feel at home.
