The internship program offers a variety of career exploration opportunities for the students of Bishop Gorman High School ranging from journalism, broadcasting to law and the medical field.
Students can apply as juniors. Although it is unpaid, it is a great way to be immersed in whatever career that’s chosen. The coordinator of the program, Ms. Houston said, “nowadays, it’s not just education anymore. People want experience when they go to hire you.” A college education is great but you can’t gain certain skills and knowledge without experiencing it first hand.
Students gain various skills of organization, leadership, and communication. Ms. Houston said, “you have to learn how to assess the situation and say ‘this needs to be done, so I’m going to do that’ and then also problem solving.” A lot of students in high school lack real-world skills that are highly necessary to their own success. It’s important to have these skills and when given the opportunity it’s key to take it.
When being chosen for the program, the students will be interviewed to ensure the classes they’ve taken and internship they are applying for aligns with their interests and where they see themselves after college, “we look at what their grades are, behavioral issues, or if they even have the time,” Ms. Houston said.
Once the student is fitted for a certain company, Bishop Gorman reaches out to the company. The students are responsible for organizing the hours and completing the hours required by the company.
The last day to turn in your application is March 28, to find out more information about the Bishop Gorman High School internship program, contact Ms. Houston at [email protected].
