Many of the clubs and organizations on campus are run by some of the amazing women at Bishop Gorman, one of them being Student Television Network (STN).
With Sutton Stoft ‘25 and Lucia Mazzara ‘25 as its presidents, STN is one of the newest honor societies at our school, making its debut at Bishop Gorman this school year.
Stoft and Mazzara are also part of BGTV, ASG, National Honor Society, are student ambassadors, and are in charge of the Bishop Gorman Instagram. Additionally, Stoft is part of Spanish National Honor Society and Sports Production Club, and she writes for The Lance; Mazzara is part of National English Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, St. Thomas Aquinas, and is the president of Matthew 25.
Stoft gave her definition of leadership. “Being a leader is a part of who I am. I think a good leader is someone who listens to their peers and makes decisions that benefit the majority of the people. Yes, you always want to make the decision that you think is right, but a true leader puts others first.”
Both students worked hard to earn the positions they have today. Mazzara explained that “leadership is something that you’re taught, and it’s not something you’re given.”
As the co-presidents of STN, Mazzarra shared that her and Stoft “are in charge of making sure that all of our BGTV classes go well and everything gets done.”
Stoft also commented on their role, emphasizing the importance of working with each other as a team. “We work together as leaders, to make sure all members of STN are all successful not only in tv production, but also in the real world. “
This year, with the opening of the student union, the broadcast classes were moved into a new and improved studio. Stoft said, “moving into the new studio this year made the class more daunting, requiring more effort from both practicum and normal BGTV students. It has taken a village to keep the show running.”
However, she feels there will be improvements as the show progresses. “Next year, I think that all of the little kinks will be worked out.”
Since Stoft and Mazzara will be graduating in May, Mazzara shared some of her thoughts on what she hopes will happen in the future for BGTV and STN alike, “I really just hope that in the future we get to perfect our shows in our new studio and that kids really get the opportunity to explore the creativity with packages and the ideas they want to do.” She added that she hopes that STN will grow and develop as a program and will “gain more attention and more popularity to help kids get on that path so they can help it prepare for their futures.”
Mr. Valle, broadcast teacher, commented on how the girls exemplify leadership in their roles in STN. “They sort of naturally gravitate towards making sure things get taken care of,” and mostly lead “by example.”
He also shared, “Lucia and Sutton are kind of born leaders. There’s not really much they have to do other than just be themselves.”
