Last week, National English Honor Society (NEHS) made cards for Letters of Love; organized by Yvonna Schuckman ‘25, this service project allowed NEHS members to earn service hours and also bring some joy into someone’s life.
From their website, Letters of Love is an organization that “works closely with children’s hospitals in all 50 states to ensure that we have the most updated list of acceptable phrases for hospitals around the country,” and sends cards to those children to hopefully bring a smile to their faces.
Schuckman shared that she got the idea for this project from National Honor Society (NHS). She realized that this was not only a good way to help NEHS members earn more service hours, but also give back to people who are in need of love and support. “I always think it’s a great idea to give a little love back to people,” Schuckman shared.
A member of LLS, Schuckman said that throughout her high school years, she has “been more connected with trying to give back to people that are hospitalized…For me, being knowledgeable of the type of stuff that happens with people in the hospital, I just try to help as much as I can.”
After researching how to get involved with Letters of Love, Schuckman presented the idea of making cards for this organization to Mr. Radzak, moderator of NEHS.
Mr. Radzak said, “Yvonna’s inspirational leadership is a great reminder for all young people: one person can make a difference.”
As shared by Mr. Radzak, the students who participated in this project worked hard on making these cards to bring some light to these children’s lives. “The NEHS students have put much love and effort into this project. From their creative artwork to their humorous puns in the cards’ inscriptions, these cards will definitely brighten the days of the kids who are battling an illness.”
The cards were collected last week in Mr. Radzak’s room. The last day to turn them in was Wednesday Feb. 26. Students could turn in two cards for one hour of service or five cards for three hours of service, with three hours being the most amount able to be received from this project.
Schuckman shared, “I feel like for kids in the hospital [making the cards]…was more touching to me because for them being kids and having to go through whatever they’re going through, just doing anything to kind of brighten their day just makes me feel like that’s a good thing that everyone should be doing.”
