Bishop Gorman flag football faced off against Liberty in a home game on Tuesday, Feb. 11, but unfortunately took second place. Bishop Gorman lost 41-21. They maintained a winning record. They hope to see growth into the next season.
Grace Yager ‘25 said, “I think we got unlucky having to go long in situations, and I think we were definitely unprepared for that.”
Being hit with unpredictable plays during the football game, it caused the team to go long in multiple situations. Being forced to go long was not a viable strategy for the game and so the team struggled with that during the game.
Mariana Yanez-Calvillo ‘25 said “I think we lost against Liberty because we were a bit cocky from just beating them recently and we weren’t as aggressive in the second half when we needed it the most.” Varsity won against Liberty in the preseason which led to false confidence going into the game. With a mindset that they had already bested Liberty before, it caused the players to be less focused during the game.
Yager said, “The challenges we faced were that liberty had a lot of talent and girls who played all year round, and we came up short… so I think they have more experience.” Flag football is a new sport brought to bishop gorman so our varsity has a few players who have played flag football as a main sport. This meant that the team overall was not super experienced.
With that, comes the hope that the flag football team will come to flourish and become a major sport at Gorman. Making the playoffs is a great achievement and it only makes it even more impressive that this team is coming off their first year as a team at Gorman. This is just the beginning and the possibilities for the team are endless.
Calvillo said, “the loss of our first playoff game meant the end of my flag football career.” This ended up being a tough defeat for the team as it was the end of the beginning for the flag football team, as it was the closing game of their first season. Seniors on varsity were disheartened knowing that they were not going to get another chance to represent their high school as a flag football player again.
“All of us, including me, played our best in this game.” Calvillo said.
