Thinking about trying something new in the 2025-2026 school year? Want to write, but don’t know where to start? Come write for the Bishop Gorman Lance by taking Intro to Journalism!
Course requests for next year opened up last month, and will be open until April 1st. If you are looking for another elective to take and want to expand your writing and reporting skills, journalism might be the perfect fit for you.
Taught by Mrs. Keating, this class is a great way for students to get to know their school better. By going to different events around campus for articles, writers get the opportunity to get more involved in the Bishop Gorman community and experience things they had not thought of before.
“I like the ability to write about stuff that we find interesting and being able to experience new stuff on campus and write about it,” Sports Features and Co-Managing Editor Oliver Feit-Leichman ’27 shared.
The atmosphere of the classroom is unlike any other, with writers and editors fostering a community centered around their love of writing and reporting. With fun class parties and potlucks, Mrs. Keating has a good way of making the class feel like they are in their own little newspaper family.
“The atmosphere of the Journalism classroom is probably one of the best parts. Everyone in the class gets along really well, and the little parties and bonding activities we do are super fun!” Paizley Cogswell ‘28, staff writer said.
Each year, students are given the opportunity to go to a journalism conference in the fall where they can learn more journalism, get lessons from highly trained student journalists and journalism teachers , experience a new city, and meet new people from around the world. This year, the program visited Philadelphia, PA.
“My favorite part of the Philadelphia trip was getting closer with everyone in the class, just the bond we made, and learning more skills not only from the workshops but from the people there,” said Geneva Miller ‘26, Entertainment Editor.
