Last year, the class of 2025 had a new choice for their theology elective.
This year was the first year Bishop Gorman offered the course “Women in Faith.” The course is meant to explore the lives and stories of the remarkable women in the Bible.
Women of Faith focuses on themes throughout the Bible and delves into how women in the Bible represent larger concepts. “The themes that we focus a lot on are loyalty, trust, wisdom, and friendship. These are all really important because they are all foundational themes that come with your relationship with God and help foster a relationship with him,” said Brooklyn Espinoza ‘25.
Each woman has a story and by looking at each story individually students learn about the times and the circumstances in which these women lived, and more importantly how they lived. “We focus on different women from the Bible who highlight those certain themes and learn about them and how they exemplify them in the Bible” said Jordan Vandever ‘25, one of four boys in the class.
Shining a light and highlighting these matriarchs is central to the Women of Faith class. “It is important to talk about women in the Bible because they really aren’t mentioned as much as other people, so to talk about them gives them more recognition for the amazing things that they did,” said Lindsay Betke ‘25.
Oftentimes women are overshadowed. The Bible is full of patriarchs and strong men, but the women are just as important, and should be researched equally as much. Shining a light on these women helps give young women in high school great role models they can relate to better.
Mrs. Kardon teaches the Women in Faith class. “Unlike traditional theology classes, this course focuses specifically on women in the Bible and their profound impact on faith and history… It also connects those ancient stories to modern questions about gender, faith, and equality,” said Mrs. Kardon. Her passion for teaching and educating is evident through her lectures and the love and gratitude her students have for her.
Women in Faith will be offered again to the class of 2026, along with Honors Philosophy, World Religions, and Catholic Imagination. There is only one class this year, but there is so much potential for Women of Faith to be a permanent senior year theology elective.
