The Gaels flag football team remains undefeated in the 5A Southern league playing with a perfect record of 4-0 and a 7-1 record only losing to Palo Verde High School earlier in the season. The team extended their winning streak to 5-0 in a thrilling 34-31 victory over Liberty Jan. 8th.
The Gaels had a good first half with a leading score of 20-0 but the Liberty Patriots caught up. Captain Niah Waldman ‘25 expressed how the team put in a lot of strategies for just Liberty alone because of the challenge they were facing. She said that Bishop Gorman’s offense “showed out when we had to” putting another victory on their record.
Captain Grace Yager ’25 described that by winning the game, the team feels like they can do anything this season. “It is probably one of the headrest teams we have played so far and I think it was a good test for us,” Yager said.
With the Gaels beating the Patriots they have a lot of confidence for the rest of the season. “ I think we gave a lot of confidence that we can probably beat Shadow,” Yager said. Shadow Ridge High School is the Gaels biggest rival as they are undefeated this season and have won the last three state championships.
By keeping with this pace the Gaels plan to use their next four games to prepare for their biggest matchup of the season including next Monday’s game against Las Vegas High School. The team says that if they each do their part and keep up the intensity, there will be a state championship trophy in their name.
