Hidden in plain sight, Bishop Gorman has its own hockey team. The team has quietly emerged as a sport and is making strides to establish themselves as a strong team. Now in its second year as a team, the JV team is composed entirely of all Gorman students, all brought together due to their deep love for the sport and commitment to their faith.
The team’s commitment to God is just as strong as their commitment for the sport. God plays a huge part in the team’s identity. The team uses their love for God to further push their connection as a team. They carry their faith on the ice, as before and after every game they pray and give thanks to God no matter the outcome. Anthony Montana ‘28 says “after (each game) we go to the center of the ice and pray as a team.”
Their special bond creates a strong unity both on and off the ice. Graham Murray ‘28, explains, “It’s great knowing that I have people who have my back,” highlighting the support the team is built on.
Despite their growth throughout the last two years, many students here at Gorman still don’t really know that the school has their very own hockey team. The team is fairly hidden, as not much has been announced from the school. Although the team is fairly new, the team has big dreams and ambitious goals. Players hope to win the championship this year and have a high performing season. Micholeone Recabarren ‘27 explains that the team goal is, “to win, to win a championship.”
The dream to win a championship is only the start for these young athletes. As they are determined to leave their own mark on and off the ice. As the team continues to grow on and off the ice, they are ready to show the school they are here to stay.
