Blake Lively, star of the movie It Ends With Us, received negative attention due to her insensitive comments about domestic violence, which is the movie’s theme. Lively was labeled as ‘tone deaf’, and is upset by this backlash.
It Ends With Us, portrayed the theme of domestic violence, yet Blake Lively promoted it as a romantic movie. Fans are in dispute over the fact that she made a film about an abusive relationship seem romantic. When asked about the movie Lively blindly exclaimed, “Grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it!”
Domestic violence is a serious issue in our culture and her negligence to acknowledge the subject paints a picture that she is ok with domestic abuse. Wellness counselor, Mrs. Cross gave her perspective about domestic violence and the impact a popular movie like It Ends With Us has, “advocates for victims of domestic violence have been vocal about their disagreement with how the movie has been promoted, and how Lively has handled interviews. It appears that it is a combination of frustration and disappointment, specifically for failing to take advantage of the platform she has been provided and a missed opportunity to shed some into this very serious issue”.
Lively went public on social media apologizing for her take on this serious issue. Health teacher Mr. Cicero believes, “admitting you’re wrong can be tough, but it’s actually a sign of strength and maturity. It shows that you’re willing to learn and grow.”
Though Lively’s promotion of the movie damaged her reputation, she is now focusing on upcoming projects such as the adaptation of the book We Used To Live Here to try and move forward.
It Ends With Us ultimately sparked a lot of important conversations and opened a discussion of difficult subjects.
