Nov. 9th, Bishop Gorman girls volleyball absolutely dominated the 2024 NIAA Volleyball Playoffs in the 5A South division winning state champions against Coronado High School in Reno, NV. Throughout the tournament the girls went 3-0 with all of their games playing the best teams in Southern Nevada. The Gaels not only controlled the playoffs but crushed the season going 12-0 in their league and 29-8 in their overall season making them the No. 1 volleyball team in Nevada for the 2024-2025 season.
University of Pittsburgh commits and captains Ayanna Watson ‘26 and Trinity Thompson ‘26 describe this feeling as overwhelming and exciting.
Winning the last four out of five state championships made Gorman hungry for victory this season. Winning isn’t easy but staying on the top is even harder. When head coach Gregg Nunley took over the team in 2018, he wanted nothing more but to win as many state championships as possible. Outside hitter Boyana Pesic ‘28 said, “It was my first experience going to state and I was really excited and motivated.” Winning state back to back is joyous and fulfilling, but doing it as a freshman is even better.
Going into the next season, the Gaels plan to keep up the same energy having new people step up in place of the departing seniors. Watson said, “It’s going to take other people stepping up.” Even when leading in the game or season, the team continues to stay motivated so no laziness rolls onto the court. Pesic ‘28 says that the best way to stay motivated is by “having good energy and being fun.” Gorman plans to win next season’s state championship and stay undefeated with the continuous mindset that has worked for them for the past two years.
