For Bishop Gorman’s 70th anniversary, ASG decided to travel back in time 50 years, to the groovy era of the 70’s.
ASG is working hard to plan and organize a special homecoming dance, assembly, and week October 14-19 to create a spirited and symbolic experience for Gorman students to remember forever.
Normally, ASG suggests brand new themes and votes on the ultimate one, but this year ASG the school as a whole embraced the 70th anniversary by doing a 70’s theme.. Lucia Mazzara ‘25 said, “the inspiration for the theme this year was Bishop Gorman’s 70th year anniversary. We wanted to really highlight all of Bishop Gorman’s history with this milestone, and we thought a great way to do that was with a 70’s themed homecoming.”
Being that this year’s homecoming is especially important to the school, new activities are being incorporated into homecoming week. Activities Director, Mr. Gleich said, “we’re going to do two things this year, which we’re really excited about. The first one was we’re going to do a HOCO proposal contest. We’re going to take the top four or five and put them up against each other to let the students vote, and the winners will get a $100 card towards their dinner that night or whatever. We’re also going to do a crown decorating contest for our seniors. The teachers will vote for the best one and the best one will win an Amazon gift card.”
Mr. Gleich also brought up something that all students have the chance to take part in—tie-dying shirts. “Because tie dye was a big deal in the 70’s, on Tuesday of homecoming week, we’re going to do a tie dye at lunch, and anybody can bring in any white shirt they want and tie dye it and then wear it Thursday.”
With lots of new activities happening, everyone is encouraged to participate. Last year, the HOCO theme was Barbie. Pink glittery decorations engulfed the entrance. This year vibrant and exciting colors will permeate throughout the school. The eagerness and anticipation for the dance will build up in the upcoming weeks and create a lively atmosphere within Gorman.
“It’s different from last year’s theme because this theme revolves around a time period, while last year’s theme celebrated pop culture,” sophomore class president Aikus Chadha ‘27 said, “I like this theme better from last year’s theme because I enjoy the style of the 70s.”
Mr. Gleich also talked about his excitement to add some color to the halls of Bishop Gorman. “You know, in the past couple years, Stranger Things was very black and red, Barbie was obviously very pink, so what’s really fun about this one is we get to be a lot more colorful, so the halls will pop a little bit more. All very exciting for us. We’re looking forward to bringing the theme to life!”
With the new opportunity to add a spot of color, and ASG working hard to make the week awesome, this year’s homecoming is going to be a hit!
