Not even the infamous Friday the 13th could take down No. 5 Bishop Gorman Football this past Friday. Bishop Gorman took down No. 12 Orange Lutheran (California) at Fertitta Field with a score of 55-28 after taking a devastating loss against Mater Dei on September 6th.
During this game, head coach Brent Browner described that by taking the easy aspects and evaluating critical moments in past games, big plays were produced. Wide Receiver and LSU commit, Derek Meadows ‘25 commented on the mindset the team needs, “we can’t worry about what happened in the past, we have to bounce back and move on.”
Backup quarterback Maika Eugenio ‘26 was able to step up and secure the win after throwing four touchdown passes in the first half after starting quarterback Melvin Spencer ‘25 was injured when going against Mater Dei. Eugenio said that by being able to trust his offensive lineman, he was able to relax and comfortably throw the ball. “it was just a great team and a lot of people were just doing their job.”
The first play of the second quarter, Eugenio was able to feed Meadows the ball and scored a touchdown putting them in a14-7 lead after battling a tough defense. Meadows said “[Orange Lutheran’s defense] are tough for sure, but they make me better overall and I really get to work the technique that coach showed me.”
Eugenio threw six touchdowns for Gorman and completed 16 of 24 passes by feeding the ball to Hawaii commit Brandon Gaea ‘25 who was able to score a touchdown putting Gorman at 35-14 at halftime. Newly transferred wide receiver Greg Toler ‘25 was on a high and scored three touchdowns keeping up the momentum for Bishop Gorman. Toler said, “I’m having a lot of fun seeing my team get excited and all of us making plays and coming together and I’m happy to see us bounce back from a loss.”
Next week, Bishop Gorman has a bye week, but on September 27th at 6:00 p.m., they plan to take down 5A Division 1 Liberty High School on their home turf to keep their winning streak alive.
