Bishop Gorman Campus Ministry has changed the requirements and expectations for service hours.
MercyWorks is Bishop Gorman’s new, improved, and more effective Christian Service program. It will eliminate direct and indirect service and bring more reflection to Bishop Gorman students’ community service experience.
“The MercyWorks program is a comprehensive Christian service learning curriculum, so each year builds towards the next,” stated Head of Campus Ministry Mr. Sinclair.
Freshmen must complete 21 service hours, five of which must be completed on Bishop Gorman Campus or in the parishes and schools of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas. The remaining 16 hours of service will be completed during four service days throughout the school year.
Sophomores must complete 12 hours of service, five of which must also be completed at Bishop Gorman or in the parishes and schools of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas. Seven additional hours will be completed through Bishop Gorman’s day of service on April 8, 2025.
Juniors must complete 15 hours of service at three different sites that are approved.
Seniors must complete twelve hours of service at one location.
Along with these hours of service, additional theological reflections will be completed in order to encourage students to contemplate what service is really about (Bishop Gorman, 2024).
The purpose of MercyWorks is to make service more intentional, and Mr. Sinclair made it clear it was not to discredit anyone’s prior charitable work.
“Everyone’s service meant something if they did it with a heart of Christ, it’s just that now we want to make sure we’re structuring service in a way that it ties into what [the students] are learning in theology.” Sinclair continues, “We’re doing it with intention and reflection upon how the gospel inspired their service.”
MercyWorks will bring a new light and perspective to community service at Bishop Gorman with advocacy on the reflection of service.
