On Friday, August 16th, our 2023 National Championship varsity football team the Bishop Gorman Gaels defeated the No. 17 ranked team, Kahuku Raiders (Hawaii) with a score of 33 – 7 at Fertitta Field.
For many of these players the mindset going into that first game was a “go go go” mentality. They went out there with confidence and determination to bring home the win for Bishop Gorman by applying their practice to the real game.
For starting offensive lineman and University of Hawaii commit, Kawika Hallums ’25, his attitude for the first game of the season had a lot to do with flipping that confidence switch, “for the longest time I never had any confidence and for some reason I just hit that switch today and I have been the most excited in a while.”
Hallums also described how excited he was for his fist Bishop Gorman football game after moving here. He wanted to be the support system for his other offensive lineman and did not want to let anyone down so he put on a performance.
Offensive lineman and University of Miami commit, SJ Alofaituli ’25, described how important his senior year of high school football is for that first year of college. Alofaituli said, “Right now I’m going through an injury but I’m just trying to work hard and stay disciplined throughout everything here in the season. Just trying to get stronger and faster during the offseason to start as a Freshman in Miami.”
These highly trained and skilled athletes show up every season to put on a performance to defend their 2023 National Title. With a win at the start of the season they may do just that. Applying their mentality, practice, and wisdom to every single game has brought them to where they are now and will continue to keep them there.
