Bishop Gorman has welcomed a brand new student into our community.
Luke Basson ‘26, from the Western Cape of South Africa, has recently transferred here to continue his academic prowess.
What brought Basson here was his mother getting a new job at UNLV, where she was named Executive Director of the International Center for Gaming Regulation. This job entails the study of regulatory imperatives as aligned to their development for the dynamic and innovative gaming industry.
Basson was born and raised in the Western Cape of South Africa. The Western Cape is at the very southernmost part of South Africa, and to get there from Las Vegas would be a twenty hour flight. According to the world population review, the population of Western Cape is 4,977,833, with about forty five inhabitants per square kilometer.
“My mother was offered a job at UNLV to work as the executive director of their Gaming Institution. She came to Las Vegas last year and we followed and arrived here on January 10th. I then started school on 2nd February” Luke added.
Luke has been able to settle into the new school quite quickly, with even getting his wish granted at the Winter Week assembly. He scored some new Bishop Gorman swag to wear at school.
“Getting to explore a small part of the Las Vegas strip was quite a fun time. As well being called up during the assembly to get an official welcome from everyone. That was a true highlight,” Basson said.
Luke has been loving America, especially Las Vegas. He is now able to have opportunities in America that were once not possible.
“To be honest, getting the opportunity to be a part of something other than my home country. I’m looking forward to learning about how things are done here in the USA and also getting to thoroughly explore my new home. I intend to make the most of this opportunity,” Basson added.
