The BGHS Dance Team took 1st place finish at the National Dance Association Regional Competition in the Hip-Hop Division.
The dance team has been performing at sporting events and assemblies for Bishop Gorman the past few years. However, they have never competed as a school in dance. This year they pulled through, worked hard, and won their first ever competition. The team’s biggest influence are the UNLV Rebel Girls. Earlier this year they were able to perform alongside them at the UNLV showdown.
We spoke to Jaila DelaLlana ‘25, about the experience. “Our coach gave us the opportunity to perform at the UNLV showdown along with other high schools and perform all of our pieces. We also got to perform with the internationally known UNLV Rebel Girls & Co. It was great exposure for us and gave us a chance to get our first performance jitters out before our competition. The experience it gave us performance wise, was amazing and honorable to witness other teams and what they were to bring to the competition as well.”
The dance team itself is composed of 30 members as well as a team captain, co-captains, and junior captains. Lauren Peterson, ‘24 has been on the dance team for the last four years. As a senior that joined the team during COVID, becoming a team captain was a dream come true, “a lot of dedication and friendship has come out of the dance team. I’ve learned that you genuinely have to work hard to get where you want and to get better. My friends from dance are also the most important people to me because they inspire me to dance better and be a better person in general.”
Hailey Wells, ‘26 said, “the dance team itself has been a very positive and fun environment. It has brought me so many amazing friendships, and taught me lessons such as leadership, communication, band responsibility. The team has brought me some of my closest friendships, and has helped me grow not only as a dancer, but as a person . I will always love the community I surround myself with when I am with the team.”
