The Bishop Gorman mock trial team traveled to Denver. Colorado the weekend of Oct. 20th to 22nd to compete in the Providence Cup. The team was invited to participate in the tournament which was held at Denver University.
Mock trial here at Gorman is a class and a club where students who are interested in law can participate in simulated trials where every student plays a different role in the trial.
When asked about what mock trial competitions are made up of, Connor Penny ‘24 stated, “in a mock trial there is always a defense and a plaintiff/ prosecution. The whole mock trial team is split up into three groups who work hard to defend or attack the side that they are put on, and the cases vary from murder cases to just simple financial argument.” He went on to describe, “the preparation is one of the best parts of being a part of mock trial. We work hard in class for weeks preparing our side of the case reading through multiple affidavits that support our evidence, usually our preparations consist of taking time to read each individual affidavit, breaking them down, and making a compelling argument out of it.”
At the Providence Cup, the three Bishop Gorman teams had great success, with Team B snagging the Rookies Award. Leila Mardirossian, ’24 won the Best Attorney Award and Shawn Dali, “25 won the Best Rookie Witness Award.
“I joined Mock Trial out of my own interest in learning law and I think that others should join it too. It offers some amazing field trips like the one I just went to and also teaches each student our own state law and how the court systems work,” Penny said.
