Since 2020, horror movies have not been scaring people like they did years ago.
There are many known horror movie franchises such as Scream and Halloween that have a pretty big fan base–but are these movies actually good? With every new movie, fans are able to predict every kill or twist, ruining the appeal of being scared by a horror movie.
“Slashers have no unpredictability because the genre is already established, one final girl and everyone else dies eventually,” Cameron Miller ‘24 said.
Big movie corporations are not producing the “jumping out of my seat”’ kind of horror anymore, leaving many fans disappointed and longing for something to make them really scared.
“I think a lot of horror movies today are very repetitive, especially ones from big franchises such as Scream and Saw,” Abigail Watson ‘26 said, “those kinds of movies aren’t as enjoyable as the original because they all have a similar storyline.”
There have been many times when fans have expressed their criticism of horror movies, and sometimes those directors use that response and make changes.
“I think that producers could probably do more research on what really frightens people,” Watson said. “I also think that a horror movie where characters make more reasonable or smart decisions would make the movie’s outcome less predictable.”
Horror fans are not getting the scares they want and are getting bored of the repeating unoriginality–hopefully directors will hear the people’s cries for something better in the horror movie industry.
“I feel like especially in the scream franchise they use big actors and the originals to kind of pull audiences in and just use the same plot,” Watson said. “I mean come on, a new killer who was related to Sidney or Billy comes and tries to kill more family of Sidney or Billy is kind of pathetic and boring.”
