World History teacher, Mr. Nathaniel Silva, joins the Bishop Gorman faculty for the 2023 to 2024 school year.
Mr. Silva, a Honolulu, Hawaii native, joined Bishop Gorman as a world history teacher. He was born in Oahu, Hawaii and lived in the suburbs of the small town of Kailua for most of his life. His family line spans back six generations in the land of Hawaii. In his family, he has three older sisters, all being over a decade older than him, with his parents, sister, niece and nephew all currently living in Las Vegas. However, his career started long before moving to the Las Vegas valley, with him beginning teaching in 2011.
“In 2011, I started teaching at Saint Louis School, a Gorman rival. In 2013, I left Saint Louis to teach English in Shanghai, China for 6 months,” Silva stated. “I returned home and resumed my career as a high school teacher at Damien Memorial School. I taught at Damien from 2014 to 2020.”
Currently, he is a world history teacher, however, he has taught multiple social studies classes during his twelve years of teaching.
“I have taught U.S. History practically since 2011 when my career began. World History takes 2nd place at roughly 10 out of my 13 years. I’ve also taught U.S. Government, Consumer Economics, Geography 7, and 9th Grade English,” Silva said.
Silva explained why he made the choice to move from Honolulu to the city of lights that Bishop Gorman students call home. “Over the summer, I was visiting my family for my father’s 80th birthday. At the time, I was considering a move to Nevada due to the increasing prices in Hawaii,” Silva stated, “I saw that there was an opening at Bishop Gorman High School, and I was intrigued because it is a school with a great reputation in the United States in general.”
When asked about his approach to teaching, Silva stated, “I do my best to remain positive with them, even when students doubt themselves. What happens is they often surprise themselves by doing better than they anticipated.”
