Bishop Gorman’s Theatre guild spent a day working with the organization U.S. VETS.
This direct service hour event was organized by one of Bishop Gorman’s own students, Grace McCulloch ‘24. The theater tech manager that supervised the event, Michael Martin states that “one of our students here recognized there was a need. So along with the help of her parents, [McCulloch] organized a 5k fundraiser.”
McCulloch started an organization called Vegas Patriots which dedicates itself to helping local veterans in vegas. She organized a 5k race to help raise money to provide food and funds to U.S. VETS, another organization dedicated to helping homeless veterans.
“My grandma was a veteran and I have a lot of family who are veterans … so this experience was so rewarding to me and fulfilling,” McCulloch said. McCulloch also invited the theater guild to help and participate in this service hour opportunity with her.
The students not only served the veterans food and helped provide them with food and toiletries, but also took time to get to know them. This service hour opportunity really impacted the students who participated. Several students said they had built a connection with the veterans, receiving advice and encouragement from them,
“It was amazing being face to face with people in need because we were all able to see the impact that we were having,.” Lily Simmons said, “it was also amazing because we were given the opportunity to hear their words of advice for us.”
Several students walked out of this experience not only feeling fulfilled for helping those in need but also walked out with new ambitions and outlooks on life. “We just got to talk to them. That was probably the best part for me, is connecting with the veterans, seeing their story, having fun with them as people,” stated Max Wieseler ‘24.
