After a productive off-season, the Bishop Gorman football teams are prepared to be back in action Friday, Aug. 18th. With another tough schedule up ahead, players on the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity levels remain eager to play under the lights at Fertitta Field.
Freshman football, which underwent a two-week summer camp before official practices began, focused mainly on conditioning and agility for the upcoming season. Their season starts a day earlier than others, playing Foothill High School, Thursday Aug. 17th.
Santiago Amatangeo ‘27 feels there is vengeance to be achieved after the freshman program lost last year for the first time in 15 years to Liberty High School, “we need to go undefeated, especially with Liberty circled on our calendar.”
Junior varsity football, composed of sophomore and junior student-athletes, will head to Draper, Utah to play against Corner Canyon High School. After a long off-season, expectations remain high although the program underwent a coaching change this summer.
Anton Gorup ‘26 feels with a strong defensive unit, they plan to “go undefeated through all eight games while remaining disciplined.”
Varsity football, who faces one of the toughest high school schedules in the nation, will also travel to Utah to play against Corner Canyon High School during week one. Losing 30 plus seniors after the conclusion of last season, a brand new defense was built.
Alijah Carnell ‘24 is a Defensive Linemen and likes the way the defense has come together, “a lot of young guys stepped up and are going to play big roles for us this season.”
The Gaels first varsity home game is Sept. 1st at seven o’clock under the Friday night lights at Fertitta Field.
