Bishop Gorman’s Derek Meadows Wins Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year
By Charles Correa ‘24
Derek Meadows ‘25, a 300 meter hurdles state champion and elite football player was named the Nevada Gatorade Track and Field Player of the Year for 2023.
Meadows ran a personal best of 36.73 seconds in this year’s 300 meter hurdles event. Just fractions of a second behind the nation’s top time of 36.23. Meadows received national recognition with his 6’6” frame. Because of his frame, hurdling came natural for Meadows, making it seem as if this was not his first year competing in this event.
Once receiving the honors, Meadows felt “all the hard work paid off.”
Meadows knows track and field is in his blood. His father was a decathlete and All-American back in his time on the track. After finding a passion for track and field at a young age, Meadows never looked back.
Being a multi-sport athlete, Meadows feels the fine tuning in track and field “works the small muscles not used often in traditional football workouts and practices.”
Meadows is a top ten rated athlete in the country for not only track and field but football as well. To watch the Nevada Gatorade Track and Field Player of the Year 2023, head out to the track this spring 2024 to witness him compete.
